Section 3 Pilot Study

3.1 Pilot Overview

Overview of Piloting Aims/Goals - To demonstrate the feasiblity of collecting in-person measures of interoception in pregnant women. - Collect pilot data for grant.

3.2 Pilot Details

Questionnaires

  1. Open the REDCap Questionnaires on the iPad
  2. Hand the participant the iPad and ask them to complete the questionnaires
    1. You can let them know:
    1. Each questionnaire will automatically proceed to the next
    1. If they have any questions, they can ask you for clarification
    1. It should take approximately 15 minutes
  1. When the participant has completed the questionnaires, they will return the iPad to you.

Physiological Hook-up

  1. Ask the participant if they need to use the rest room
  2. Collect Height and Weight measurements (enter into REDCap).
  3. Ask the participant if they have any skin allergies or sensitives
  4. Summarize/explain the physiology procedure to the participant
    1. i.e., “Ok, so now I am going to place some sensors on your body. The sensors will stick to your skin but can be easily peeled off. I will place two sensors on your right and left collarbones, and one on your lower left rib cage. I will clean the area with an alcohol wipe and some gauze. I will walk you through everything as we go, but if you have any questions or anything feels uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to let me know.”
  1. Place ECG Electrodes:
    1. Find where you will place sensor
    1. Clean the area with the alcohol wipe and then gauze
    1. Apply a small dot of electrode gel to the sensor
    1. Stick the sensor to the skin
    1. Repeat for all 3 spots
  1. Have Participant sit in chair (in front of stimulus computer).
  2. Attached leads to electrodes
    1. ECG & Respiration attach to same transmitter
  1. Check Signals in Acqknowledge

HBD Task

  1. Open Psychopy
  2. Run HBD Task
  3. First complete 2-min baseline
  4. Then explain task instructions
  5. Have participant complete task (40 trials)

Clean-up

  1. Stop the physio recording
  2. Detect the wires from the participant
  3. Have participant remove sensors
    1. They can do this themselves or you can help if they prefer
    1. “Ripping it off like a Band-Aid” is NOT best approach typically
    1. Hold the skin, while peeling up, usually works best – if sensors are particularly sticky

Pilot Interview

  1. After completing the HBD task and removing sensors, complete the pilot interview
  2. Verbally ask questions to the participant and take notes of their answers in REDCap
